Bolton Wanderers were founder members of the Football League in 1888 but could not compete with the likes of Preston and Aston Villa in the early years. They reached the 1894 FA Cup final but lost 4-1 to Notts County. Bolton did go onto feature in two of the most famous FA Cup finals in the 20th century, in 1923 they won their first trophy in the first ever final at Wembley, the so-called 'White Horse Final', while in 1953 they lost 4-3 against Blackpool in the 'Matthews Final' despite leading 3-1 at one point. League-wise, Bolton reached a nadir in 1987 when they slipped into the fourth division for the only time in their history but bounced back at the first attempt and were back in the Premier League by 1995. A new ground, the Reebok Stadium, opened in 1997 and though the Trotters suffered two relegations from the top division in the 1990s, they have now been in the top division since 2001 and competed in the UEFA Cup for the first time in 2007-08. Though never a giant of the game, of teams who have never been champions of England, they have played more seasons in the top-flight than any other, 69.
