History

The most successful team in English football history, Liverpool were formed in 1892 and played at Anfield since their inception. Liverpool were formed when Everton vacated the ground due to a rent dispute. In 1893/94 Liverpool played in Division Two and they won it without losing a single game, while In 1901 they won their first title. The Reds did it again in 1906 and in the 1920s won their first back to back titles. That was the club's last success before World War II though they won the title in 1947. That heralded a period of struggle, however, and they were relegated in 1954. Five years later they made one of the decisions of the century by appointing Bill Shankly as manager. He led them back to the first division in 1962 and two years layer they had secured their sixth league title. Two more titles, two FA Cups and one UEFA Cup (the club's first European trophy in 1973) followed before Shankly retired and left the team to Bob Paisley, a member of the famous Anfield Boot Room. Paisley simply stepped up a gear and added 14 trophies to the bulging cabinet. He was succeeded by Joe Fagan who won a treble (league, League Cup and European Cup) in his first season but was manager as Liverpool were embroiled in the Heysel disaster in 1985. Kenny Dalglish added a league and FA Cup double in his first season as manager as well as titles in 1988 and 1990, the club's most recent. In the Premier League era the team have consistently finished in the top echelon of the division but rarely challenged for the title. A cup treble in 2001 under Gerard Houllier appeased the fans and a Champions League triumph, the club's fifth, arrived in 2005. Liverpool's long-standing rivalry with Manchester United is as strong as ever and made even more acute as the Manchester side close in on Liverpool's record number of league titles.
