History

Originally born as St Marks in 1880, City became Ardwick AFC in 1887 before changing to their current name in 1887. In 1899 they won the second Division and the following season they disputed their first in the top flight. In 1904 a first trophy arrived, the FA Cup, after beating local rivals Bolton 1-0 but two years later there was scandal after 17 players were suspended due to financial irregularities. They recovered to reach two more FA Cup finals in 1933 and 1934 and finally won their first League title in 1937, though they were relegated the following season despite scoring the most goals. The FA Cup victory in 1956 is best remembered for the bravery of legendary keeper Bert Trautmann who stayed on the pitch despite having (unknowingly) suffered a broken neck. The 1960s saw City relegated but they soon bounced back and won a second League title in 1967/68. This was the best period of the club's history, and they followed their title with another FA Cup in 1969, as well as the European Cup Winners' Cup and the League Cup in 1970. City then missed another two titles by just one point before winning their last trophy in 1976 (another League Cup). Since then the club have lurched from crisis to crisis culminating in the double relegation in the 1990s, which saw them become the first ever European trophy winners to be relegated to the third tier. This nadir only lasted a season, however, and City returned to the Premier League in 2002 where they have been ever since. A year later they moved to the City of Manchester Stadium and in 2007 they were bought by Thai businessman Thaksin Shinawatra who has since pumped considerable amounts of money into the squad.
