The club were born in 1878 as Newton Heath by workers at the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath. They dropped the last bit of the name in 1893 before switching to Manchester United in 1902. 1906/07 was their first season in the top flight with the new name and in 1908 they won their first title followed by their first FA Cup a year later and another championship in 1911. However, they had to wait until the late 1940s to be successful again and it was under the management of Matt Busby, appointed in 1945. They finished as runners-up three years running before lifting their second FA Cup in 1948. In 1952 they won the league again and more importantly Busby started to develop his team of youngsters, the Busby Babes, who went on to win two more titles in 1956 and 1957. Only the Munich air disaster in 1958 where eight players died, prevented that gifted side winning more trophies. Busby patiently re-built the side and with the likes of Denis Law, George Best and Munich survivor Bobby Charlton, United won the FA Cup in 1963, the league in 1965 and 1967 and in 1968 became the first English side to win the European Cup when they beat Benfica 4-1 at Wembley. The 1970s and 1980s saw a sharp decline, however, with relegation in 1974 and the only silverware a pair of FA Cups in the 1980s. Another turning point was the appointment of Scottish manager Alex Ferguson in 1986. Although his early years were problematic, he won the FA Cup in 1990 and avoided the sack. Since then United have not looked back. They have won 20 major trophies and at the moment they are just one league title (17) short of Liverpool, they have won the FA Cup a record number of times (11), they were the first team to do the double twice (1993/94 and 1995/96) plus more importantly they have two more European Cups (with the one in 1999 part of a historic treble).
