History

Formed in 1882 as Hotspur FC, they added the Tottenham moniker two years later. Though they initially used blue shirts, by the end of the century they had switched to white as a tribute to Victorian giants and double winners Preston North End. Though Tottenham turned professional in 1895, they won the FA Cup as a non league club in 1901 (they are the only club to have won the FA Cup both as a league and a non league member). In 1909/10 Spurs played their first season in the top flight and were relegated in controversial circumnstances in 1919 to make room for the second division's sixth place team Arsenal. A great rivalry was born. Spurs can boast other records: they were the first side to win the double in the 20th century in 1961, they were the first British side to win a European trophy in 1963 and first winners of the UEFA Cup. They also played, and won, the first all London FA Cup final in 1967 (2-1 v Chelsea). They showed the rest of football a new global road to follow when they signed Argentine pair Ricky Villa and Ossie Ardiles in 1978 and won the 100th Cup final in 1981. They were also the first club to be floated on the stock market. The Premier League era has seen Tottenham invariably finish in mid-table though they narrowly missed out on fourth place in 2006-07. They added another League Cup in 2008 under new Spanish manager Juande Ramos. Tottenham's main rivals are local neighbours Arsenal as well as Chelsea and West Ham.
