The wintry conditions are taking their toll as the first weekend football fixtures have been called off.
The League One games at Scunthorpe, Crawley and Bury have all fallen victim to frozen pitches while the League Two matches at Accrington, Rochdale and Southend are off for the same reason.
Accrington Stanley have confirmed the signing of former Southampton, Everton and Sheffield United striker James Beattie as player-coach, according to the club's official website.
The 34-year-old, who won five England caps, has agreed an initial deal until January, having joined as a free agent after leaving Sheffield United in May.
Watford duo Piero Mingoia and Matty Whichelow have joined League Two Accrington Stanley on loan. Midfielder Mingoia will be with the club for a month, and Whichelow will stay for three.
Paul Cook has signed defender Tom Eckersley on a one-year contract following a successful trial. The former Bolton man joined up with Accrington for a pre-season trial, and impressed the manager enough to earn a deal.
