Bilek calls for spirit of 1996

Czech Republic coach Michal Bilek has admitted that the Czechs' victory over Portugal at Euro 96 should serve as an inspiration for his side as they again face the Portuguese in a European Championship quarter-final this evening.

We want to use Portugal's own style of play against them. We need to adapt to adapt to their attacking game in order to defend successfully.

...I don't think you can characterise this match as Czech Republic against Ronaldo. He's obviously a very dangerous player, but Portugal have others. They've got a very balanced team.

I've got nothing against repeating the result in the quarter-final of Euro 96 between our teams [a 1-0 win for the Czechs]. In that game Portugal were also favourites. If we play as we did against Greece and Poland we'll have a chance of victory.

Much like Greece, the Czech Republic were outsiders heading into this tournament but anything can happen in the knockout stages so Chelsea's Cech right to look smug.
