Nottingham has beaten off Manchester and Portsmouth to win the right to stage a £1.6million two-year pilot project aimed at testing ways of getting more people playing football regularly.
The Football Association had £1.6millionn of public funding for the amateur game cut by Sport England in March after failing to reverse a decline in participation - last year there were 1.84million people playing football regularly, a fall of 100,000 since April 2013.
Former England and Manchester United midfielder Alan Smith is set to join Notts County.
Smith, released last week by MK Dons, will continue his playing career at Meadow Lane where he will also form part of Magpies manager Shaun Derry's coaching staff.
The 33-year-old passed a medical on Monday afternoon and is close to agreeing a one-year contract with the Sky Bet League One club, who narrowly avoided relegation this year.
It will be a first official coaching role for Smith, although he did gain some experience during his final year with the Dons.
He will work under Derry and alongside assistant manager Greg Abbott - who he will be familiar with from his time at Leeds as Abbott was an academy coach at Elland Road at the start of Smith's career.
Chris Kiwomya has left his post as manager of Notts County "by mutual consent", the club announced today.
Kiwomya joined County in February 2012 as their development squad manager and has been in charge of the first team since February this year following the departure of Keith Curle.
On their website the club said "despite playing an attractive and exciting style of football" it was decided the two parties would "part company".
County lost 1-0 at home to Preston on Saturday, leaving them bottom of League One, with just two wins from their opening 13 matches.
Galatasaray played League One Notts County in a pre-season friendly, with the Turkish side winning late on thanks to goals from Burak Yilmaz and Wesley Sneijder, following an earlier deflected striker from Enoch Showumni.
New Blackburn Rovers boss Gary Bowyer has already made his mark by bringing in Chris Taylor from Millwall, Notts County's Alan Judge, and goalkeeper Simon Eastwood.
