Nigel Worthington has resigned as York City manager, leaving the club in 22nd place in League Two.

The former Northern Ireland boss has quit following Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Newport.

After Saturday's result and in the best interests of York City, I have made the difficult decision to leave.

In recent weeks, performances have not been up to my high standards and I take full responsibility for this.

Matty Blair dealt former club York a major blow by scoring the only goal to give Fleetwood a slender 1-0 advantage in this rescheduled Sky Bet League Two play-off semi-final first leg.

Blair, signed by Fleetwood when out of contract last summer after turning down a new deal from York, bundled home a 50th-minute winner almost two years after scoring the goal that sent the Minstermen back into the Football League.
