On this day: Uruguay seal spot at 2010 World Cup

On 18th November 2009 Uruguay claimed the final spot in the World Cup in South Africa by drawing with Costa Rica 1-1 to take the two-leg playoff 2-1 on aggregate.

Uruguay went on to become the team that took everyone by surprise in the tournament - reaching the semi-finals before eventually losing to the Netherlands 3-2. They ended up taking fourth place after another 3-2 defeat to Germany. Their forward Diego Forlan won player of the tournament.
