On this day: Charlton return to the Valley in 1992
On 5 December 1992 Charlton Athletic played their first home game at The Valley in seven years, and capped the occasion in style by beating Portsmouth 1-0.
The Valley had once been the largest stadium in London with a capacity of 75,000, but went into decline after the war. By the 1980s it had been repossessed, and Charlton were forced to groundshare first with Crystal Palace and then with West Ham.
However, in the late eighties plans were laid for a return to the club's home, and with funds raised The Valley was re-opened for the visit of Portsmouth.
Colin Walsh's 7th-minute goal capped the occasion with a victory for the Addicks.
