Southend boss Phil Brown led out his team at Wembley as they took on Crewe Alexandra in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final on Sunday - just weeks after he was controversially installed as manager at Roots Hall following the sacking of Paul Sturrock.

Southend had initially indicated they would allow Sturrock to return to lead the club for the game, as thanks to him for guiding them to Wembley. However, the controversial idea was rejected by Sturrock.

Brown did, however, allow his assistant Graham Coughlan the honour of standing alongside the Southend team during the national anthem, opting instead to stand in the technical area.
