Footballer takes a pay cut

Owen Coyle has revealed new-boy James McClean took a pay cut to join Wigan.

The Republic of Ireland international completed a deal in excess of £1m when he moved to the Latics from Sunderland yesterday.

He took a drop in salary to come, such was his desire to play football.

That was fantastic to see in a young man.

All too often in football, finance is the motivation for some players.

It is great to have someone at your football club who is prepared to take a step back because he believes it will eventually lead to making two forward.
