The British & Irish Lions ran riot with ten tries against the Golden Lions at Ellis Park in Johannesburg in a confidence-boosting effort on the second match of tour.

Jamies Roberts and Ugo Monye both crossed twice while captain Brian O'Driscoll, Tom Croft, Tommy Bowe, James Hook and Stephen Ferris also notched up tries.

Combined with nine conversions and two penalties, it was exactly the sort of emphatic win that Ian McGeechan's side were after.

They led 39-10 at half-time on the ground where John Bentley's stunning 1997 score ignited that tour. Bentley himself had backed Monye to make an impact on the night and so it proved.

Saturday's late win against a scratch Royal XV team had many fans worried but this assured performance shows that momentum is building in the squad and combinations are starting to come together.

Coach Warren Gatland said: "In the first game we hadn't been together long but they fronted up today.

"We earned a bit of respect. We've not been given much of a chance and wanted to show we're a decent team."
