The British & Irish Lions were denied a morale-boosting victory ahead of Saturday's second Test after a late converted try earned the Emerging Springboks a draw at Newlands.
Captain for the evening Ronan O'Gara put the Lions ahead in Cape Town with an eighth-minute penalty. Six minutes later full-back Zane Kirchner kicked a clearance straight into the arms of flanker Martyn Williams and the ball eventually found it way to Keith Earls on the wing to cross for a try. O'Gara's conversion made it 10-0.
Two penalties from Earl Rose kept the hosts in the game, but with four minutes to go James Hook kicked three points to take the Lions seven clear.
However, in a frantic finale Danwell Demas scored a try in the corner for the Emerging Springboks, and Willem de Waal made light work of a tough touchline conversion to earn his side a draw.
It got worse for Ian McGeechan's men after the game when lock Nathan Hines was cited for a dangerous tackle on his opposite number. If found guilty at a disciplinary hearing on Wednesday, his tour will be over.
