25 July: Matt Rendell - A long old trek

Published: Saturday, 25 July 2009, 7:30PM

It's a long old trek. We've just started a 700km drive to Paris for the final stage with an ETA of 2am tomorrow morning.

And we've just seen Alberto Contador win his long old trek around France.

As most of you know, it's a bit of a ceremonial stage on Sunday, although a Mark Cavendish win would truly confirm this as Britain's best-ever Tour de France.

Bradley Wiggins fought doggedly on Sunday and saved fourth place in GC by 3'. That equals Robert Millar's 1984 result, and then you add five, possibly six Cav wins and from being a nothing nation in terms of cycling we've become a major international force.

Funny old sport. Never funnier than on Friday night. I was expecting a valiant breakaway of small-timers to seize the day - actually, I was desperately hoping Leonardo Duque, a good friend, to make it to the finish line.

That would have been great for him and just as great Cofidis, who've really got very little out of this Tour and must be worried about continued sponsorship.

Not too funny for them then! Instead Cav pops up out of nowhere and steals even more of the French family jewels. Greedy sod!

We've just overtaken the Silence-Lotto bus on the A7 heading north - maybe that should be silent and invisible.

Poor old Cadel. I can remember in the last press conference of last year's Tour he gave short shrift to a Danish reporter, who was under orders from her producer to ask if he had lost all hope of ever winning the Tour.

Second place two years in a row and only 30th this year ... you've got to wonder if he'll ever recover.

Sastre too. 17th. I love the guy; he's laid back, open, friendly and all of that. But I think he always knew that there would be one opportunity for him. No more.

As for Lance, those three years when he was out of the sport already seem a long time ago. Radioshack? Not a name with a great deal of star quality to it. But I'll tell you what: it wouldn't surprise me if he bought a big bag of shares in them towards the end of last week!

Contador won't be part of it, of course. He was pretty clear in his post-race press conference that whichever path Lance is taking in the future, he'll be taking too. In the opposite direction.

But the fact is, in this sport, all paths leads to Paris. And our ETA is now 1.48am.
