11 July: Beware the new Wiggins

Published: Saturday, 11 July 2009, 12:55PM

Alberto Contador provided a dramatic finish to yesterday's stage, but the story for British cycling fans was Bradley Wiggins of Garmin-Slipstream and his brilliant climb in Andorra.

It's been a tough start to the tour for Wiggins in one sense: I suspect he'd had his heart set on the yellow jersey for some time, his plan being to wear the coveted maillot jaune after the team time trial on Stage 4.

And had he not missed that split on Stage 3 when Columbia attacked, my calculations tell me he'd have had the overall race lead by 3" in Montpellier lastTuesday.

So he's cut a somewhat abject figure after missing an opportunity that might only come around once in any cyclist's career.

After that team time trial he just rode off into the distance when I tried to talk to him, he was so disappointed.

But yesterday was different. Wiggins has been sitting on a secret weapon - his new, improved climbing ability.

Wiggins has lost 6 or 7kilos since the last Tour de France but also has lost none of his power, which was the key to his success on yesterday's climb.

Not only was he rubbing shoulders with some of the best climbers in the world, at times it looked like it was him dragging guys like the Schleck brothers up the mountain.

We have to reassess him as a rider now. Not many can make the switch from a powerful pursuit rider to someone who can compete for Grand Tours.

I think Wiggins will try and conserve his energy for the Alps now - and a podium in Paris is not totally out of the question.

Finally, Alberto Contador's attack was the unexpected move that many people expected. The likes of Andy Schleck was talking last night about how impressed he was by the Spaniard's attack: it will be fascintating to see if he can pull the same sort of stunt in the Alps.
