We exist because nobody should be held hostage by debt and poverty. But the truth is that they are rife in the UK. In a society where people live behind closed doors, thousands are desperately poor. Unable to feed their children, incapable of paying to heat their homes in winter, the grip of poverty is relentless. It breaks families apart and drives many to think that suicide is the only solution. We are passionate about releasing people in our nation from a life sentence of debt, poverty and their causes.
We aim to provide the advice people need for the problems they face and improve the policies and practices that affect people's lives. We provide free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to everyone on their rights and responsibilities. We value diversity, promote equality and challenge discrimination. See our website for individual National Helpline Numbers.
Turn2us helps people in financial need gain access to welfare benefits, charitable grants and other financial help – online, by phone and face to face through our partner organisations. From April 2013 through to 2016, major changes are being made to the benefits and tax credits system affecting millions of people in this country. Turn2us has mapped these most significant changes on a timeline, which can be filtered to the benefits that are relevant to you. You can also sign up to receive email alerts when a specific benefit changes.
WorkingFamilies is the UK’s leading work-life balance organisation. The charity helps working parents and carers and their employers find a better balance between responsibilities at home and work. Our free Legal Helpline gives parents and carers advice on employment rights such as maternity and paternity leave, rights to time off in an emergency, and parental leave, as well as helping them to negotiate the flexible hours they want. We can also give basic advice on the benefits and tax credits that working parents can claim. We also give advice on maternity discrimination and pregnancy discrimination.
SingleParents.org.uk is the parenting site by single parents for single parents. It is delivered by a dedicated team at Single Parent Action Network (SPAN) and by our volunteers. SingleParents.org.uk brings together essential information, expert advice, interactive learning, multi-media content, links to other support organisations and news for anyone who is parenting alone. The Salvation Army has a long history of working with people who are vulnerable and marginalised across the world and offer very practical help, unconditional assistance and support regardless of race, religion, gender or sexuality, respecting the identity and choices of all those referred to them. Anyone can find themselves facing grief and despair. Family breakdown, unemployment, poverty, homelessness, and drug and alcohol dependency are just some of the reasons why people can lose everything they value, including their dignity. In the Salvation Army we don't judge or condemn. We just help. In the UK and Republic of Ireland there are more than 800 Salvation Army social service centres and churches (corps). We run 120 drop-in centres offering support and help for people in need and serve 3,000,000 meals every year at community and residential centres.
