It was revealed yesterday that five-year old Zach Avery had become one of the youngest people in Britain to be diagnosed with Gender Identity Disorder.

At the age of three Zach started refusing to live as a boy and his parents have made the decision to bring him up as a girl. The Hub was buzzing with comments and so we’re debating the issue again today.

On one side of the fence is social commentator Anne Atkins, who herself considered being a boy at the age of eight, but says that a child of that age is far too young to be diagnosed with the disorder.

Joining her is Saffron James, a mum who is currently bringing up her 11-year-old son as a girl. She believes children know their identity from an early age. We’ll also be meeting her daughter Livvy for her view on the debate.
