The Silver Line is the confidential, free helpline for older people across the UK open every day and night of the year. Our specially trained helpline staff offer information, friendship and advice, link callers to local groups and services, offer regular befriending calls and protect and support those who are suffering abuse and neglect. If callers would like to be put in touch with Silver Line Friends, they can receive a regular weekly friendship call or email. Or they may like to join a Silver Circle and take part in a regular group call on subjects that interest them.

Our volunteers – ordinary men and women of all ages and ethnicities – love spending time with the older people. Aid for the Aged in Distress is a specialist national 'no frills' charity. It gives direct financial relief to frail, older people throughout the UK. The charity is concerned first and foremost with helping older people to cope in their own homes, by making cash grants towards the cost of necessary equipment or other exceptional expenditure. In particular, it assists those who do not qualify for local funding or government grants and fall through the safety net. Applications can be made by social workers, caring agencies, other charities, as well as families and individuals. Grants provide such things as warm clothing, bedding, furniture and respite breaks for carers and essential goods.
Contact the Elderly is the only national charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and social isolation among older people. We aim to do this by organising monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups of older people (aged 75+) who live alone, and volunteers within their local community, offering a regular and vital friendship link every month. Each older person is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home for the afternoon. The group is warmly welcomed by a different host each month, but the drivers remain the same which means that over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship. Our tea parties are a real lifeline of friendship for our older members who have little or no contact with any family or friends. They bring people of all ages together, develop fulfilling friendships and support networks, and give everyone involved something to look forward to each month.
We work to protect, and prevent the abuse of, vulnerable older adults and by doing so we also protect other adults a risk of abuse. One key way in which we address elder abuse is through our unique confidential freephone helpline, which provides information, advice and support to victims and others who are concerned about or have witnessed abuse. This helpline is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, in both the UK and the Republic of Ireland (two separate numbers). We can also operate specialist helplines for care providers, providing whistleblowing advice and support to residents, relatives and staff (contact us if you would like to be part of this service). These helplines not only provide direct advice and help to people who may be in danger of experiencing abuse but they also provide unique information on the nature, circumstances and dynamics of elder abuse.
