Beauty Belle Hayley Sparkes has always been an advocate for natural beauty products: "Using natural skin care products is a good first step in providing the skin with the right nutrients and building materials to retain its health and functionality," she explains.
"Most people are probably unaware that commonly used skincare products can often contain artificial ingredients that the body has difficulties in eliminating, and as a result it stores these chemicals in its tissues."
Read on for Hayley's guide to the skincare ingredients to try and avoid, and her pick of the best in natural beauty products.
Ingredients to avoid
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
This is a chemical detergent used in many hair and skin products, which helps them to lather. Due to industry safety concerns and a little bad press, it's now much less difficult to find sodium lauryl sulfate-free products, although if you have to use something containing it, make sure you rinse your skin and hair thoroughly - never leave a product with this ingredient on your skin.
Lanolin is made from wool but it can be contaminated with pesticides from sheep dip so is best avoided.
This is petroleum based, so it can lead to blocked pores. Mineral oil acts as a barrier, and suppresses normal skin functions.
These are chemicals, such as methyl, propyl, butyl and ethyl. Studies suggest they may interfere with the body's endocrine system, which is made up of glands that produce and secrete hormones. Look out for paraben free labels on the product's packaging.
