HTC-Highroad sprinter Mark Cavendish has admitted that he made a mistake and didn't kick for the line early enough after he lost by inches to old team-mate Andre Greipel in Carmaux.

"I tried to go at 250 (metres to the finish line) and I kind of hesitated a bit and didn't kick with 250 to go, I didn't commit early enough," said Cavendish, "I'm disappointed, I feel I made a mistake."

Cavendish lost vital points on Greipel's Omega Pharma Lotto team-mate Philippe Gilbert in the hunt for the Green Jersey.

Despite previous reports that Cavendish and Greipel didn't see eye-to-eye when they were team-mates at HTC-Highroad, the Manxman says he's pleased to see the German get his first ever Tour de France stage win.
