HTC-Highroad's Mark Cavendish believes Philippe Gilbert's attack at the intermediate sprint on Stage 13 was planned, rather than a misjudgement.

"He (Gilbert) tried to attack us (on the intermediate) and tried to get away. Of course (it was a tactic) he's got to try in which ever way he can to get the points," said Cavendish of his green jersey rival.

"Gilbert is riding 21 one-day race here, but I don't know how long he can keep that up but he's a phenomenal rider so maybe he can until Paris, we'll see.
