IG Markets Rider of the Day Stage 11 - Lars Boom

Despite Mark Cavendish winning his 18th Tour de France stage win it was Lars Boom who won the IG Markets Pro Cycling Index Rider of the Day. The Independent’s Alasdair Fotheringham explains why:
"Lars Boom for believing that he could achieve the impossible and stay away even after the rest of the break of the day had been swallowed up. Only caught two kilometres from the line, prologue specialist Boom's stubbornness made it seem touch and go if it was going to be a bunch sprint."
Judge: Alasdair Fotheringham (The Independent)

Throughout the Tour de France our expert panel will pick out a performance of the day for each stage. The aim is to highlight the sterling work or exceptional performance of a rider who may not have grabbed the headlines.
Rather than rewarding a stage winner, we want to single out the great performances from his teammates who helped him win. This could be a domestique who spent many kilometres on the front closing down a breakaway, or a sprinter’s lead-out man who did his job so well that his sprinter coasted to victory
