Omega Pharma - Lotto's Jelle Vanendert said he had nothing to lose as he made a late surge to win Stage 14 of the Tour de France.
The Belgian surprised everyone as he finished 21 seconds ahead of Spain's Samuel Sanchez, with Andy Schleck a further 25 seconds behind. The stage victory also means Vanendert claims the King of the Mountain's jersey. He is currently on 74 points in the fight for the polka dot jersey, just two points ahead of Sanchez.
"I surprised myself, I think it's normal eh? The first win with the pros and a stage on the Tour, a little bit of a surprise."
At the end of the stage Vanendert's close friend Philippe Gilbert was the first to congratulate his compatriot.
"He (Gilbert) was very happy for me, he knows what I suffered with my knee and the work I did to come back and the work that I did for him. So it was a thank you from him to me."
