Thomas Voeckler remained in the yellow jersey after Stage 17, but the day wasn't without its drama for the Frenchman, as he went off the road and into the garden of a house on the descent into Pinerolo.

"At the top of the last climb I tried to go alone," he told ITV's Ned Boulting. "I went wide."

And Voeckler admitted to having a lucky escape at one point, even though his struggles cost him valuable time in the race for the yellow jersey.

"The first time I had to jump about one metre," the Europcar rider said. "I was really scared and I was very lucky. At that moment I was just behind Contador and Sanchez...and I lost many seconds."
