Rider profile: Peter Sagan
A brilliant mountain biker as a junior, Sagan has had no trouble whatsoever adapting to the road. His attacking style, all-round ability and hunger for crossing the line ahead of anyone else have earned him inevitable comparisons with the great Eddy Merckx, although Sagan just wants to make his own name on his own terms. Winning the green jersey in 2012 showed that he is worth the hype, and he is short odds to repeat the feat this year.
Sagan's brash showmanship, which has extended to pinching a podium girl's bottom, is not to everyone's taste, but he brings a rock-and-roll personality to a sport that is short on genuine characters at the head of the peloton.
