Tour of Britain to start in Liverpool

The Tour of Britain will start in Liverpool for the first time, race organisers announced on Monday.

The 'Grand Depart' opening stage on September 7 will see riders tackle 10 laps of a 13-kilometre circuit, starting and finishing on The Strand in the city centre, close to the Royal Liver Building.

Tour of Britain gets upgraded status

The Tour of Britain will sit alongside some of professional cycling's most prestigious events, having been upgraded to HC status by the UCI for 2014 and beyond.

Britain's national Tour has been awarded the 2.HC status by the world governing body, putting it on a par with major events such as the Tour of California, Tour of Qatar and Criterium International.

The 2014 Tour of Britain will take place from Sunday 7th to Sunday 14th September.
