Tesco Denied Planning

People living in Ystrad Mynach near Caerphilly say they're prepared to take on Tesco, if the supermarket giant wins in a bid to extend its store in the village.

The company wants to turn its existing store into a larger store known as a Tesco Extra. However it has recently had two planning applications refused.

It's now appealing against the decision and locals say if it's successful, it'll force many shops out of business.

Wales' first supermarket Carrefour opened in the Ystrad Mynach area in 1972. But over the last four decades the number of superstores here has snowballed.

There are 108 Tescos in Wales and it's the country's biggest private sector employer.

Residents are also worried about potential traffic problems after local traders in Newtown voiced their anger at a new lights system there that was designed for Tesco and caused huge tailbacks in the area.

But in a statement Tesco has said: "Our town centre store is extremely popular, with customers welcoming plans for a wider variety of products and an improved shopping environment.

"We firmly believe that our proposals will encourage more people to shop locally.”
