Gerrard set to leave wife Alex Curran and family at home during World Cup
England captain Steven Gerrard has been quoted as saying he would prefer to be away from his wife and children at this summer's World Cup, as they would be a "distraction" from football matters.
"I thought it was bit of a distraction, so in 2010 when I set off for the World Cup in South Africa, I preferred for my family to be away from me and I could focus on trying to get my form right," Gerrard said. "So I will be doing the same again in Brazil."
England boss Roy Hodgson has said he's relaxed about the potential presence of wives and girlfriends in Brazil, but his skipper is staying focused on his game.
"The last thing I want to be doing is getting dragged here, there and everywhere by three young girls – which is not their fault, but I have to sacrifice that side of it for hopefully six weeks or eight weeks and hopefully get the rewards," Gerrard added.
The Liverpool mainstay plans instead to speak to his family on the phone and over the internet.
