Coronavirus: Tokyo 2020 Olympics postponed until 2021

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics have been postponed for a year due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, the International Olympic Committee announced today.

The move comes after some teams had already signalled their intentions not to compete at the games if they were going ahead.

The event, which was due to begin 24 July, will now take place "no later than summer 2021" according to the IOC.

The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games have also been postponed.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said: "I proposed to postpone for a year and [IOC] president Thomas Bach responded with 100% agreement."
