Could HRT protect women against coronavirus?

As data shows that men are suffering worse effects of Covid-19 than women, specialists are exploring whether hormone replacement therapy could help to protect women from the disease. Menopause specialist, Dr Louise Newson, joined Lorraine Kelly to explain how she's collaborating with a team of experts to gather more evidence for policy makers.

Dr Newson explained: "What we do know is that men have more severe disease with Covid-19 than women... so for a while we've been thinking is that something to do with our hormones. We know that oestrogen is very important for our immunity - so the cells that fight any infections."

Questions have now been added to the Covid Symptom Study app asking women about HRT, menstruation and the contraceptive pill in order to provide further data to establish whether HRT could be effective.
