Furlough scheme extended to end of October, Chancellor Rishi Sunak announces

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced that the coronavirus job retention scheme, which pays furloughed staff 80% of their wages, will continue until October 2020.

However, from August employers will share the burden.

Mr Sunak told MPs in the Commons that after August, employers using the scheme can bring furloughed staff back on a part-time basis.

The government will ask companies to "start sharing, with the government, the costs of paying people’s salaries".

Seven-and-a-half million employees are being covered by the scheme.
