Official figures reveal thousands of coronavirus-related care home deaths
Figures released today revealed there have been thousands of deaths in care homes across the country from coronavirus.
Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) showed there have been more than 5,000 deaths in the care sector.
The ONS says there were 3,096 Covid-19 deaths in England and Wales up to April 17.
The inaugural CQC figures showed 4,343 deaths with Covid-19 between April 10-24.
The difference in the figures between the organisations is due to the way the deaths are reported.
ONS looks at registered deaths, which includes death certificates which include a mention of Covid-19 while CQC looks at death notifications -care homes telling the regulator in England they’ve had a death with Covid-19.
