The armed robber turned athlete

If I did not engage in sport I would have ended up dead

John McAvoy

A former convict who spent almost ten years behind bars with dangerous criminals like hate preacher Abu Hamza has turned his life around to become one of the UK's top ultra-athletes.

John McAvoy grew up around crime and was an armed robber - but after training for hours a day in prison became the world's best long-distance triathlete.

He joined us this morning to discuss how the death of his best friend made him decide to turn his life around and why he wants to encourage others to do the same with his autobiography Redemption.
