'This government doesn't follow the scientific advice, it just follows politics.' - Independent SAGE scientist

The government is following politics instead of the scientific advice as it eases lockdown, according to a member of the Independent SAGE group.

Scientist Zubaida Haque says the government is not following the available science as it looks at reopening schools.

She spoke to Ben Shephard and Charlotte Hawkins on Good Morning Britain saying that Independent SAGE warned against opening schools on June 1 and the advice was ignored.

"Independent SAGE said to them we've done the modelling and it's not a good idea to open schools on June 1," Haque said. "If you open schools on June 1 without a test, tracking and isolating support programme in place then you are exposing a lot of vulnerable people to coronavirus."

She added: "It was very risky for children, we told them to wait. This government doesn't follow the scientific advice, it just follows politics."

Today the government reduced the coronavirus threat level to level three, which means social distancing measures can be gradually relaxed, on advice from the Chief Medical Officer.
