Danny Dyer joins 'cousin' Charles in search for the Prince's Trust ‘Mentor of the Year’
EastEnders star Danny Dyer announced the four finalists in this year’s GMB Mentor of the Year award for the Prince’s Trust, whilst speaking about the importance of having a mentor.
Danny opened up about having playwright Harold Pinter as a mentor in his own life. He said:
“I had a mentor myself for a couple of years and I realise how important it was now – someone looking out for you in your life."
“As human beings, we should look after each other anyway, especially young people.”
"It was also somebody that believed in me as a human being and I was a bit of a lost soul. When you’re young you don’t really know where you’re going in life, especially if you come from a broken home, which I did."
"He would tell me straight when I needed it as well. I’m forever grateful for the two and a half years I had of that man I really looked up to and listened to.”
Danny Dyer expressed his gratitude for being part of the Mentor of the Year awards, explaining how he believes the youth need mentors now more than ever.
“Especially at the moment with the youth, quite lost in this country, they don’t quite know what they’re doing or what they’re trying to achieve in life, no hope or whatever. We need some people to give them some guidance. These people seem incredible.”
Dyer joked to GMB’s Kate Garraway about the awards ceremony itself:
“I’ll be straight Kate, when I got the email a couple of weeks ago, I thought I was presenting it with Charles… but it’ll be you, Kate."
“It's about times me and him [Prince Charles] had a meet and I might put the lips on him. Break all protocol as cousins do and just, you know, give him a nice cuddle and a kiss.”
