29-year-old killed after shots fired during riots in Northern Ireland
Police in Northern Ireland has confirmed that the 29-year old woman who was shot during the riots was promising young journalist Lyra McKee.
Tributes have been pouring in for the investigative reporter, describing her as a 'beautiful soul' and a 'rising star' in the world of reporting.
Politicians from all sides are united in condemnation to the killing - and the police are appealing for calm as they continue the investigation into Lyra's killing.
One eyewitness, who hid behind a wall during the violence said: "I heard a pop pop pop of gunfire. People were screaming and wailing in hysterics."
PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Mark Hamilton said: “Unfortunately, at 11 o’clock last night, a gunman appeared and fired a number of shots towards the police.
He went on to say: “A young woman Lyra McKee, 29-year-old, was wounded. She was taken away from the scene in a police Land Rover, but unfortunately, she has died. Therefore we have now launched a murder inquiry. We believe this to be a terrorist act.”
The police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
