Inspiring football team backs GMB’s 1 Million Minutes campaign
Good Morning Britain’s 1 Million Minutes campaign helps people who are lonely over Christmas - and so far more than 50 million minutes have been pledged!
For people who have lost a loved one the festive period is especially difficult. A GMB and OnePoll survey said a quarter of people felt lonely at Christmas - and one in 20 said that they have cancelled Christmas after the death of a loved one.
Sands United are supporting GMB’s 1 Million Minutes campaign to speak about loneliness and how they started a football team to help combat the grief.
Teammates Rob Allen (Founder), Leon Gavin, Luke Barker and Nick Hilliker found a shared love of football united them all, helping them to feel less isolated after they each lost a child.
Player Leon Gavin explained his reason for joining the team: “It gave me a purpose. Something to really get involved in. I was out in the street delivering flyers, trying to sort out raffle prizes, all sorts which kept me from being inside and just being closed in on myself, which I originally wanted to do.”
