Coronation Street's Jane Danson says her harrowing new storyline will 'change Leanne as a character'
Coronation Street star Jane Danson told the Loose Women that her character, Leanne, will be changed by her on-screen son, Oliver's mitochondrial disease storyline.
Leanne was given the news that Oliver may have the rare and incurable life limiting condition, and, over the next few weeks, viewers will follow both her and Oliver’s dad, Steve, as they wait to find out what's happening to their child.
Christine told Jane she found the scenes "so tough to watch" and the Corrie actress said she'd found some elements of the storyline difficult too.
"It just felt like we had a huge sense of responsibility because sadly, out there, this is someone’s story. It’s not a particularly easy story be involved in but it is someone’s journey", she explained. "I’ve already had lots of messages from families who are sadly going through what Leanne and Steve are going through."
"We’ve spoken about how people react to this situation, what impact it has on their families and friends and obviously their everyday life. We're on pause right now, but there’s still a long way to go and it is quite difficult in parts."
Jane admitted that she had initially been worried about where the storyline might go, and concerned about how Leanne might react.
"I do know the endgame. I do know this will change Leanne as a character and, hopefully, that will mean I can take her in a different direction and I can continue, but who knows?
