Michelle Gayle talks about Danniella Westbrook's 'free drugs' during EastEnders days: 'There was a lot of temptation'
MICHELLE GAYLE TALKS GRANGE HILL AND EASTENDERS - AND FRIEND DANNIELLA WESTBROOK'S DRUG ADDICTION
We loved her as Fiona Wilson in Grange Hill and Hattie Tavernier in EastEnders. But Michelle revealed there was a darker side of drugs during her time on the soap.
'There was a lot of temptation,' Michelle explained. 'The area I was in was undergoing a lot of drugs. When you're on EastEnders and you're a teenager and people are presenting drugs in a glamorous way, I'd seen the downside.'
'Me, Sid [Owen] and Danniella [Westbrook] were peas in pod. Danniella was the beautiful young girl. She used to be offered drugs, she didn't have to buy any. It was dressed up as the glamorous thing to do,' she added.
'There was a point where it was, "You need to go", because I wasn't partaking,' Michelle said of her no drugs stance. 'It was hurtful because at that point of the night I had to go, but I wasn't going to partake.'
Michelle, played Hattie for three years in soap until she quit in 1993 to focus on her music career. And revealed she was asked for sex by producers when she was working on her music career.
'As a young recording artist being sent to America, your record company drop you there and then leave you. No chaperone. [Producers] spent most of the day trying to sleep with me and a little bit of recording,' said Michelle, who is working with Craig Revel Horwood on her upcoming touring musical Son Of A Preacher Man.
'They would say, “If you do think how much better the record would be…” It was the done thing. They were quite surprised when I said it was no. I found it so normal that I thought it was OK, so didn't say it to my management or to my parents.'
