Abi Austen returns to Afghanistan battleground
Abi Austen became the first British Army officer to transition from a man to a woman and is now the world's first transgender foreign correspondent, featuring in a new documentary this week which sees her return to old territory in Afghanistan.
Abi, who served with both the British and American army in Afghanistan, joined Amanda on the sofa to talk about her return to the battlefield and her unprecedented tour of the site of the former Camp Bastion for Channel 4's Unreported World series, Mission Critical: Afghanistan.
It's the first time a Western television crew has been given unique and extraordinary access to the base since the British and US military withdrawal in 2014.
In the documentary, Abi, who made the transition to a woman in 2007 after quitting the army, reunites with former colleagues on the front line.
She told Amanda much of what the British Army fought for in the Helmand Province has fallen into the hands of the Taliban.
"Afghanistan has become a forgotten war, but we can intervene and save that legacy," she said.
Unreported World airs on Channel 4 on Friday at 7.30pm.
