March For Your Mind: Dr Hilary launches Lorraine's new mental health awareness campaign
Anxiety and depression are the most common mental illnesses with 1 in 6 people experiencing a common mental health problem at some point in their life. In a bid to improve mental health, Lorraine wants to get the nation walking. Physical activity releases feel-good hormones that can help you to feel better in yourself, give you more energy and can help to manage stress and anxiety.
The NHS suggests adults aged 19 - 65 should do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity a week. Physically active people have up to a 30% reduced risk of becoming depressed and staying active can help those who are suffering depression recover.
A good walk can do wonders for your mental wellbeing, but it's not just about the occasional one-off feel good factor. Being active has a whole range of benefits when it comes to mental wellbeing; it improves self-perception and self-esteem, mood and sleep quality, and it reduces stress, anxiety and fatigue.

We can support four "guests" at a time. The service runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our warm and friendly volunteers and staff team spend up to 77 hours with each guest over their stay, giving them the opportunity to talk through their fears, thoughts and troubles. On leaving, each guest receives a goodbye letter. This is a personal record written by a member of Maytree's staff team which reflects their stay, validates their struggles and honours their achievements.
