Skincare Through The Generations

As we age, our skin changes so the religious skincare routines we swear by in our 20s might not be as effective two decades later.

In this series, Lorraine’s make up artist and beauty expert Helen Hand talks us through her skin care tips for your 20s, 30s, 40s + 50s and 65+ and beyond.


Teens are particularly prone to oily skin and acne due to hormonal changes. Many will suffer from outbreaks of spots, clogged pores, and an increase in oil on the face and body. Some may also notice rough and bumpy skin patches, particularly around the back of the arms.

  • Basic cleansing is key to help prevent blocked pores, spots and an oily T-Zone. Use a delicate cleanser or a gentle face wash. Avoid using soap as it can be drying.

  • Cleansers can leave a residue on the skin so always use a toner to remove any excess or oil. This will freshen and prep the skin for your moisturiser.

  • Most acne skins are sensitive and dehydrated so using the correct moisturiser is key.

  • Always treat the sensitivity of the skin first to limit scarring in the future. Use products designed for sensitive skin until the aggravated area has calmed down. This could take up to 6 weeks.

  • Once the inflammation and redness has subsided, work on the hydration to make sure you’re not stripping the skin of its natural oils.

  • Now focus on what’s visible to the eye. Apply blemish treatment.

  • If you do suffer with acne or breakouts, keep the hair away from the face and wash it regularly.

  • Exfoliate your entire body at least once a week to prevent build up of blocked pores and dry skin, but be careful not to overstimulate and aggravate the skin. Gently apply an exfoliator in small circular motions, avoiding inflammed areas.

  • Avoid anything too harsh as skin is still developing. Over washing with astringent products or overly scrubbing the skin can strip it of its natural oils.

  • Use a light moisturiser daily to keep the skin balanced and hydrated. Avoid heavily perfumed products.

  • Do not pick, scratch or peel acne, pimples or any sort of spotting on the face and body as this can spread the problem and leave scars.

  • Always remember the cheapest and most effective way to achieve good skin is to drink plenty of water daily, never share your towel and have a well balanced diet.


The ageing process has already started by the time you reach your twenties so protecting your skin at this stage is vital.

  • As well as following a daily facial routine suitable for your skin type, I’d recommend a weekly cleanse, tone exfoliation and mask to maintain skin’s texture and appearance. Always treat the neck and chest area as an extension of your face.

  • It’s vital to use an SPF moisturiser, foundation or a separate skin protector on your face and exposed areas of the body all year round to prevent long-lasting damage.

  • Always remove makeup before bed. I’d recommend following a gentle cleansing, toning and moisturising regime which will rid skin of the daily grimes. It’s optional to repeat this morning and night.

  • Skin is finer around the eyes so you should be using an eye cream, balm or gel to help prevent ageing, dark circles, and puffiness.

  • Weekly exfoliation will not only reduce dry skin but it will help to stimulate circulation, keeping everything flowing in the right direction.

  • Cellulite can be hereditary or caused as a result of lifestyle or diet. It can be dimply, lumpy and orange in appearance and more commonly found around the inner and outer thighs as well as bottom area. Break down the lumpy fatty deposits by massaging and brushing the affected area(s) on a daily basis. This will help to stimulate the skin and boost circulation, helping to tone down the appearance of cellulite and improve skin condition.

  • Massage tightening moisturising products into the legs will help to even the skin texture and tone.


Women in their thirties may start to see the first signs of ageing, so here’s a few of my age-defying skincare tips.

  • Just because you’ve hit 30 doesn’t mean you need to invest in anti-ageing products just yet. Skin is starting to lose elasticity, but the important thing is to keep it nourished and hydrated. I’d recommend using a serum or oil as a night-time treatment.

  • And opt for a heavier consistency cream that will last you throughout the day.

  • Pigmentation can increase during and post-pregnancy or as a result of hormonal changes, but the problem is often made worse by excessive sun exposure. Always wear a high SPF to minimise the effects or better still keep out of the sun.

  • Exfoliate skin at least once a week to keep dryness at bay and stimulate circulation

  • Brush the skin daily to boost circulation and loosen fatty deposits around the body, working deep into areas where cellulite is visible.

  • Stretch marks and scar tissue can be treated when they’re still red using a vitamin E cream or oil in and around the problem area.

  • Keeping the skin constantly hydrated and nourished is imperative for the skin to look soft and taut.

  • Minimise jowling and wrinkling around the neck by reducing the amount of time you’re looking down at your phone, computer and iPad. Try and keep electronic devices at eye level.

  • If you suffer from lack of sleep, use a gentle eye mask to improve the appearance of dark circles and puffiness around the eye area.

  • And lastly, most of us have an incredibly busy lifestyle - so take time for you - even if it’s just 15 minutes a week to enjoy a DIY pamper session.

40s & 50s

Women in their forties and fifties may experience dramatic skin changes, often caused by the menopause among other things. Skin can become dehydrated, dull, grey, excessively dry and develop deeper lines as we age. So here’s my tips for keeping it healthy and attractive.

  • Choosing the right moisturiser is critical to slowing down the signs of ageing.

  • As we age, our skin requires a more concentrated type of moisturiser to keep it nourished.

  • If an anti-ageing moisturiser isn’t strong enough - rejuvenate and replenish the skin by applying a balm or oil under your moisturiser.

  • Gently massage your neck and face during application whilst lifting the skin in an upward circular motion. Never drag the skin down. This will stimulate the skin and get the blood flowing.

  • Moisturise the body daily with a cream or oil to help stabilise and maintain the elastin and collagen which keeps the skin firm and taut.

  • Spider veins start to appear around the ankles and tops of the legs - this can be due to standing all day, being overweight or hereditary. Harsh treatment to the area can worsen the veins and increase colour. Use a gentle concealer to mask the appearance.

  • Don’t neglect your hands because they’re a big age giveaway. Keep hands exfoliated and well hydrated using a good hand cream. I’d recommend massaging an oil into your hands and cuticles before bed to keep them healthy and youthful looking.

  • Avoid dehydration by increasing your intake of water throughout the day and water-based foods.

  • It’s easier said than done, but getting at least 6 hours of sleep a night is key to maintaining healthy skin.

  • Diet and regular exercise is crucial - and don’t forget to smile!


Women 60 and above will experience an increase in dryness, a reduction in elasticity, heavier and deeper lines and some may even notice liver and age spots. It’s so important to continue to protect and maintain a nourishing skin regime.

  • Cleanse, exfoliate and always use the correct anti-ageing cream to keep skin around the face, neck and chest area firm, well-nourished and healthy looking throughout the day.

  • Always remember to apply cream in a gentle upward movement to keep skin lifted.

  • Pay special attention to the area around the eyes. Use an eye cream everyday and an eye mask at least once a week to minimise the appearance of deep and coarse lines.

  • Exfoliate at least once a week to remove excess dry and flaky skin. Massage cream or oil into the entire body to boost circulation and stimulate the lymph nodes. This will keep it soft and hydrated.

  • Skin can be particularly delicate and bruise easily. using products like Arnica can bring out the bruising and help calm and heal the affected area.

  • Don’t forget your hands! Exfoliate and moisturise to keep them looking healthy, youthful and hydrated. I’d recommend massaging an oil into your hands and cuticles before bed to keep them healthy and youthful looking.
