US superstar Britney Spears has reportedly agreed to join the US X Factor panel, as rumours circulated that fellow judge Simon Cowell was 'pursuing' the singer for the next season of the show.
While there have been no official announcements, the star has accepted a £9.4 million contract to become a judge on Cowell's talent show. The singer will become the highest paid judge in reality TV, according to EOnline, earning more than American Idol's Jennifer Lopez.
The show struggled in its debut season, axing former judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger. And it seemed that Cowell was planning his next move, saying in February:
"If she was available, I'd take her in a heartbeat. She's one of the most talked-about people in the world today.
And it may be that the X Factor judge attempted to drop a hint earlier this year:
It's not going to be as simple as it sounds for Britney. After suffering a breakdown in 2008, the singer lost legal rights to her own autonomy. The 30-year-old cannot legally sign any documents because she is under a conservatorship, in which her father, Jamie Spears oversees her decisions.
Both her father, and the residing judge, Reva Goetz need to approve the X Factor contract before she can join the show.
Britney's former agent and fiancé Jason Trawick has also seized the opportunity, becoming a producer for the show. Trawick is also hoping to become one of Britney's conservators, but her finances will remain under her father's management.
