While he swept to power amid waves of public optimism four years ago, Barack Obama returns to office facing gridlock in his attempt to deliver his final vision of the change the country needs.

The bitter election campaign revealed America to be fiercely polarised, with the political landscape in Washington reinforcing the great divide.

The re-elected President must battle his second term policies through a Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

As ITV News's Mark Austin discovered, their stark differences are unlikely to change with Obama's renewed mandate to govern, with voters on both sides still viewing the other party as the obstacle to progress.
