Russia's grasp of borders and genders has been mocked on Twitter after its foreign ministry mistakenly referred to Australia's female foreign minister as "he".

In response to Julie Bishop's comments that she planned to exclude Russian President Vladimir Putin from the upcoming G20 summit in Brisbane, the ministry tweeted:

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt was quick to notice the mistake and decided to highlight the ministry's "fairly basic" error to his 322,000 followers:

Australia's ambassador to Russia then joined in, joking that borders and genders were "all a bit confusing" at this moment in time:

Paul Myler was cheekily referring to an earlier tweet by the Canadian Joint Delegation to Nato which mocked reports that Russian troops entered Ukraine "by mistake":

Neither Australia's foreign minister nor Russia's foreign ministry have commented on the error so far.
