Politicians are prone to exaggeration but tonight Nick Clegg was telling it how it is when he said party members were facing the "fight of their lives".

One recent poll put the Lib Dems on just 6%, behind Ukip and some experts suggest the party could lose up to half its MPs at the next election.

The Lib Dem leader said they were once again the "underdogs".

That's where many believe the fightback could begin, as the party fears being in Coalition has meant they've hemorrhaged support.

This is the fight of our lives. I'm up for it. I know you're up for it.

– Nick Clegg, Deputy Prime Minister

It was a passionate speech in which he outlined a middle way for the Lib Dems.

We can't allow Labour to throw away our recovery. And we can't allow the Conservatives to put the interests of a few above the needs of the many.

The theme was underlined earlier by an a capella band singing 'Stuck in the Middle' with "clowns to the left, jokers to the right."

No prizes for guessing who that might be.
