Heroic neighbours saved the life of a five-year-old girl who plunged from a four-storey window, catching her in a quilt.

The youngster fell from her home on the fourth floor of the building, in China's Gansu Province, as she tried to climb out.

She was spotted by neighbour Yan Jijun, who was returning from the supermarket with his shopping and heard her shouting for help. When he looked up, he saw her dangling from the window ledge.

He said he dropped his bags immediately and ran to the nearest home, waking another neighbour, Yu Fei, from a nap.

She handed over a quilt to Yan, who shouted for others to gather round to hold the quilt beneath the girl.

Within seconds of the final corner being lifted into place, the girl dropped into their waiting net - and the entire thing was caught on the street's security cameras.

She was taken to hospital for treatment to minor injuries but is now on the road to recovery.
