St Paul's Cathedral has been declared Britain's favourite building - beating Stonehenge and Buckingham Palace to the top spot.

The London landmark, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, is the fourth cathedral to stand on the current site and famously survived the Blitz thanks to voluntary firefighters who patrolled the building ready to put out any fires caused by falling bombs.

In the OnePoll survey, carried out for TV channel Yesterday, 38% of 2,000 people polled said St Paul's was their favourite building.

In second place, with 30% of the public vote, was Stonehenge, closely followed by the Houses of Parliament, Edinburgh Castle and Buckingham Palace.
